It’s easy to gloss over Thorondor’s impressive wingspan. We don’t tend to use ‘fathoms’ as a measurement (except perhaps nautically), and there’s very little to which we can easily compare it.
So I whipped up this diagram utilising information found within the texts.
NOTE: The figures of the eagle and the people are approximate in terms of width and proportion, as I whipped them up myself. However, the HEIGHTS of the people and the WINGSPAN of Thorondor should be to scale. I used Microsoft Visio to first create rectangles of the correct sizes then scaled them all down simultaneously to fit an A3 sheet of paper.
Now that is impressive! Thanks for working this all out, it makes it so much clearer and vivid.
